This is a picture that I took from the bridge between sorority row and the stadium this past fall. The space that I’m talking about in particular is the land between the sidewalk and Newman Lake. Now that it’s warmer and students like to be outside more, this space is used to sit and study between classes, eat lunch with friends, or lay out on a beach towel on really warm days. Especially for those of us living lakeside in Eagle, Shorts, or Chandler, it’s the perfect place to escape the lack of air conditioning on a hot day. I think campus designers designed this space for aesthetics mostly, just to have a space that was nice to look at next to the lake. This space could be improved by making it bigger! There is very little land between the lake and the sidewalk from here continuing down past the dorms, and there are so many students that use it that having a flatter and larger area to use would be a huge improvement. I lived on east campus my freshman year and I didn’t even know this space was here since I rarely came in this direction. Now that I live in this area and am around sorority row more often, I got the chance to use it a lot this past year especially during the warm weather. When I think back on my time here at JMU I will definitely remember escaping my 90-degree room to come out here and lay in the sun. Hopefully future students will use it as much as I have.
