This is a picture taken from the entrance of hillside dorm. It overlooks the bike rack, hillside field, and TDU. It is a multi-use space enjoyed by many of the students on a daily basis. Students use it for whatever they wish. Some choose to study here while enjoying the sunshine. Tanning is a popular activity with the female residents on the nicer days. The boys prefer to play sports here, prompting many impromptu football, soccer, and Frisbee games. Some of the JMU athletes also enjoy practicing here (including softball, lacrosse, golf, quidditch and most recently, archery). Hillside Field was the home of the Marching Royal Dukes this year. Some Hillside residents enjoyed sitting outside watching them practice, while others would get annoyed that their 3 o’clock nap was interrupted. Many music majors also practice outside to get input from others about their work. This space is defined by the students who use it. It gives a sense of community, a place where all of us can gather with our friends (and also make new ones) and just have a good time. I myself have spent many sunny afternoons doing my homework there, occasionally joining in on some games. Having this place of community has definitely made my college experience much more fun.
