Rebecca Brewer: Madison Spaces, Dr H

This is a picture of the bridge that connects East Campus to the Village/Bluestone/Hillside area.  Almost every student walks across this bridge every week; whether it's because they have classes in ISAT/Phys-Chem Building, they want to eat at E-Hall or Festival, or they live in Skyline.  It's a place that everyone is very familiar with and it joins two vital portions of campus together.  The bridge's purpose became necessary when JMU started expanding and growing.  Some call it more of a sprawl, but others would disagree.  According to Allan Greenberg, author of the article Colleges Have Lost Interest in Designing Campuses with Meaning, the JMU expansion makes the campus itself lose meaning, character and significance.  On the contrast, others may disagree and say that this expansion is incredibly symbolic.  Not only is the development increasing the overall capacity, but it is bringing forth newer innovations and technology.  It is also symbolic because the newly built buildings are designed specifically for Integrated Science and Technology, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.  What better way to incorporate this growth than to fulfill the needs of our growing science departments?  This bridge is also symbolic because it creates a bond between the "old, traditional campus" and the "new, modernized campus."  It creates a tie that can represent James Madison University striving to meet the needs of every individual and their specific goals.

  1. I use this space on a regular basis, especially this semester since I have classes on both the quad and east campus. As a sophomore last year I lived in White Hall, so this bridge became a permanent fixture in my daily routine since a majority of my classes were in ISAT and HHS. I agree that this bridge is a symbol of unity between the two sides of campus. --Jordan Gray

  2. This space reminds me of the infamous walk to my health class sophomore year when I lived on campus. Now I use it on the regular via the bus system. The bridge that passes over Interstate 81 will always divide campus physically, but it definitely will not divide our campus in spirit. -Michael K.
